This second book of the Promise Rock Series can be read as a standalone. That was kind of a spoiler, but I enjoyed this sequel anyway. Shane is the new officer of Levee Oaks living with a hurtful past from L. Shane has a kind of hero complex. He likes to help and save the day. His sweet nature is often misunderstood for a simpleton brute. He is a big man.

That leads to him being an introvert and a people pleaser. He stares at him silently from afar hoping to be noticed even though he knows that he has no chance with someone like Mikhail. Mikhail is Russian with a brutal past. After his knee is injured, his dream of becoming a professional dancer is killed as well. He buries himself in auto destructive behavior, and when that is too much, his mother takes him to the US.
When fate brings Shane in his way, he takes it by his hand literally. He spends a marvelous day with this amazing man, and he leaves him waiting for more. And then Shane does something awful…he makes promises to Mickey. The sweetness and shyness of these men is just adorable. The strength that lives within, the brotherhood and the dedication to each other is tear-jerking.
So refreshing to see how Shane loves Mickey and did all he could to know him and get to know his reactions at all times. Mickey and his mom had a beautiful relationship. This second installment in Amy Lane's Promises series in no way disappointed. Although, I should mention that once again I waited until I re-read this book before writing my review.
I get pretty choked up with a lot of Ms. Lane's books and her writing so I felt it was only fair to wait a while before attempting a somewhat coherent review. Shane Perkins was a beat cop in LA who got a pretty bad deal grrrrrrr.

Along with that came a mighty big payout that enabled him to move to Levee Oaks, buy a house, get some dogs, and work for their police department. Poor Shane has not got a good view of himself.
He's a guy who has spent most of his life living in his own head within his own dreams and doesn't always have the best social skills. The fact that he's also not always the quickest at verbal come-backs and instead his mouth usually spills out rather unusual statements, has left Shane lonely and without close friendships for most of his life. He's been seen as weird and pathetic. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed. The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life.
I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels. That according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;. The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, who bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw.
Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near.
John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Now the Lord has fulfilled his promise that he made.
For I have risen in the place of David my father, and sit on the throne of Israel, as the Lord promised, and I have built the house for the name of the Lord , the God of Israel. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Not one word of all the good promises that the Lord had made to the house of Israel had failed; all came to pass. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell. He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened.
Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision?
Much in every way. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God. What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? By no means! That God is unrighteous to inflict wrath on us? I speak in a human way. But though he's good at his job, there's one thing he's not good at: commitments My home is my sanctuary.
Or is it my prison?
